Athens is a city where you can get around with the local cab, which can also be ordered with the Taxi app: Freenow. We recommend you download it before your travels.
Getting There
Athens is a well connected airport with direct flights to all major international cities. It also offers convenient connections to Greece’s stunning islands.
Accommodation Information
We are excited to share that our wedding will take place in a serene area in the south east of Athens. However, we don’t recommend staying there as the options for accommodation are limited and the surroundings are quiet.
We suggest considering the vibrant neighborhoods of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Alimos. These areas are part of the beautiful Athens Riviera, offering a vibrant atmosphere with stunning seaside views and beaches, a variety of restaurants, lively nightlife and plenty of shopping opportunities. This is where we will be staying, and our welcome party will be happening here aswell.
For a comfortable and enjoyable stay, we highly recommend exploring Airbnb options, as they often provide the best variety, price and charm.
If you prefer hotel accommodations, here are some choices in the area:
- Poseidon Athens Hotel
- Glyfada Riviera Hotel
- Athenian Riviera Hotel & Suites
- Athens Marriott Hotel
- The Margi
We will be updating our website with recommendations for local restaurants, activities and must-see spots as the date approaches, so please stay tuned for more information!

Explore Greece
If you’re staying a bit longer in Greece and looking to venture beyond Athens, we highly recommend a road trip through the Peloponnese. Make sure to stop in Nafplio for a night to explore this charming city and its stunning castle. Further south, don’t miss the ancient town of Monemvasia, which is uniquely carved into the rock. Additionally, consider visiting the ancient theater of Epidaurus, the oldest working theater in the world. It’s also the birthplace of the cult of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, where the ancient Greeks came to seek healing and worship.
Another must-see road trip destination is Meteora, set in breathtaking mountain scenery. A quick Google search will reveal its beauty! It’s about a 3-hour drive from Athens, and we recommend staying overnight in Kalabaka, a charming town perfect for hiking. Yannis has been planning to surprise Astrid with a trip here, but we couldn’t resist sharing it with you first!
When it comes to the islands, we have several favorites: Santorini, Zakynthos, Lefkada, Skiathos, and Milos. Visiting in early season means fewer crowds and delightful weather, allowing you to fully enjoy what each island has to offer.
Santorini is as romantic as you might imagine, especially in Oia, where you can witness some of the most spectacular sunsets over the Aegean Sea. Known for its volcanic beaches, ancient ruins, and vibrant local wines, Santorini lives up to its reputation. It was Astrid’s first experience with Greece, and she fell in love with the island’s charm.
Zakynthos, an Ionian island, is famous for its sparkling blue waters and dramatic cliffs, including the iconic Navagio Beach, home to a shipwreck. The island features charming villages and many delightful restaurants with stunning views—definitely on our must-visit list for next time.
Lefkada is a hidden gem that we explored in the summer of 2024. With its beautiful beaches tucked into secluded bays and lush green landscapes, it offers a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. Conveniently connected to mainland Greece by a bridge, it’s just under a five-hour drive from Athens.
Skiathos, a picturesque island in the Sporades, holds a special place in Yannis’ heart, as his family once had shops there. Known for its vibrant nightlife, Skiathos is not only beautiful but also lively. Fun fact: this is where *Mamma Mia!* was filmed!
Milos, a breathtaking island in the Cyclades, is renowned for its unique landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. With over 70 beaches, many accessible only by boat, it’s a perfect destination for adventurous beach hopping.
Throughout Greece, you’ll encounter warm hospitality and traditional tavernas offering local cuisine that’s worth exploring. We also highly recommend sampling the wines—our favorite is Malagouzia!
